Arts generate more than $300 million for Oklahoma in 2008-2009

2.08.2010

Well known as an industry leader in energy and agriculture, a new study shows the arts also provide a strong economic impact in Oklahoma – to the tune of $314.8 million during 2008-09.

The Oklahoma Arts Council released its findings today from the economic impact study conducted by Americans for the Arts. Data was collected from 247 nonprofit organizations and through more than 2,700 audience surveys between November 2008 and October 2009.

According to the study, Oklahoma’s arts industry generates economic activity of $314.8 million spent by organizations and audiences; supports more than 10,100 full-time equivalent jobs in the state; generates $211 million to local residents in salaries, wages and entrepreneurial income; and delivers $29.4 million in local and state government from taxes and fees.

“The arts mean business for Oklahoma,” said Suzanne Tate, executive director of the Oklahoma Arts Council. “As the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Oklahoma, this study demonstrates what we see on a daily basis.

“Local communities that support the arts and culture reap the benefits through jobs, generate tax revenue and increased tourism.”
