A $1.5-million intersection project was recently completed in Jones. Federal sources paid 80% of the project at Britton and Hiwassee roads, which consisted of enlarging the existing roadway at the intersection to allow for turning movements in all directions. Oklahoma County District 1 paid the remaining 20%.

The project included a concrete surfacing of the intersection and asphalt overlay for approximately 1 mile to the west and 500 feet to the east.

Mercy Health Center continues to impact Oklahoma’s landfills by recycling. In the past six months, the center has saved Oklahoma’s landfills 345 cubic yards of space — nearly 100 pickup loads of trash.

“We’re not only recycling the basics, such as plastic bottles and newspapers; we’ve reduced our water, oil and electricity usage,” says Jill Madison, Mercy’s manager of materials management. “In the process, Mercy has realized more then $400,000 in savings in the past year, and those savings are critical with our current national economy.”

In just the last year, Mercy has saved the environment 3,900 trees; 87,700 gallons of oil; 1.61 million gallons of water; and 920,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. By recycling oxygen sensors and leg-pressure sleeves, Mercy will save an additional $70,000 annually.

Oklahoma City University has launched another nautical sport. The OCU Sailing Club is not yet a full-fledged, competitive sailing team, but founding member and coach Glede Holman says the course is charted for quick growth at its Lake Hefner headquarters.

The club became an Intercollegiate Sailing Association member and obtained a couple of practice boats through donations.

Holman says the club is hoping to build a “standard fleet” that would allow it to host its own regatta at Lake Hefner.

Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Museum’s $7 million renovation project at 4040 N Lincoln Blvd. is nearing completion, after construction began in October 2007. The U-shaped, two-story building plus basement with courtyard was completely gutted and renovated. The new building will display Hall of Fame exhibits on its first floor, and a 500-seat Bud Wilkinson Event Center is now located on the building’s second floor.

Flintco Inc. is the general contractor and Frankfurt Short Bruza handled the architectural design.

Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology’s board of directors approved $1.7 million of funding for 10 applied research projects.

Projects range from stain-resistant nanocoatings to developing techniques for pipe repair in earthquake zones.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. and the city of Oklahoma City dedicated a new compressed natural gas fueling station at Will Rogers World Airport.

Designed, built and operated by Clean Energy, the large-scale, public access station will provide clean, green, domestic CNG to the expanding Airport Express fleet of shared-ride CNG shuttles. The facility, located at 4424 Amelia Earhart Drive, will be available 24/7 to serve CNG-powered vehicle fleets that operate in the area.

The Department of Airports awarded a 10-year contract to Clean Energy to develop and supply the new station.
