The Board of Directors of the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce voted to oppose SQ 744 - one of 11 statewide ballot initiatives up for vote on Nov. 2 - which would require Oklahoma to match the regional average in per-pupil funding.
"We acknowledge we need more money for education, but we feel strongly that SQ 744 is not the long-term solution to getting more money into the classroom," said Tim Deimund, chairman of 2010 Edmond Chamber Board of Directors. "We were fearful that there would be tax increases or a loss of services in other critical areas if the state question passed."
Other sources of funding have long worked in Edmond, Deimund said.
"The Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce has traditionally supported school bond issues that have come before the voters of Edmond and do not foresee any circumstances that would prevent us from continuing to do so," he said.
