Oklahoma’s unemployment rate up in September



Oklahoma’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 5.9 percent in
September 2011. The national unemployment held steady at 9.1 percent for the same period. Over the
year, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined by 1.0 percentage point.

In September 2011, Oklahoma’s statewide seasonally adjusted employment and seasonally
adjusted unemployment both increased over the month. For the September-to-September period,
statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment dropped by 18,950 persons (-15.7 percent).

Oklahoma’s seasonally adjusted non-farm employment shed 800 jobs in September 2011. Seasonally
adjusted non-farm employment for the United States added 103,000 jobs (+0.1 percent) from August
to September. When compared to September 2010, state non-farm employment expanded by 43,100
jobs (+2.8 percent).

• Four of Oklahoma’s 11 statewide supersectors claimed job gains in September, led by a 2,100-job addition
in Construction.
• The largest monthly job loss came from Leisure & Hospitality (-1,600 jobs), driven primarily by contraction
in Arts, Entertainment & Recreation.
• Nine statewide supersectors added jobs over the year in September 2011, led again by Manufacturing
(+11,400 jobs).
• Information and Other Services were the only supersectors with over-the-year losses in September.
