Oklahoma City boasted the second-highest percentage gain in private job growth among the nation's 100 largest metros in 2010, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor. The OKC metro area posted a 2.38-percent increase in the private sector from September 2009 to September 2010.

"This data is exciting for us because it shows Oklahoma City's economic resilience goes deeper than just the presence of a large government sector," said Roy Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. "To be among one of the few cities that can boast more than a 2-percent increase shows we are doing a lot of things right in Oklahoma City."

Oklahoma City created 10,400 new jobs during the past year, according to the bureau. Austin, Texas, ranked No. 1, with a 2.43-percent gain. Charleston, S.C., and Augusta, Ga., were the only other cites to post gains of more than 2 percent.
Fifty-six metro areas showed job losses in the private sector.
